I am "soft". I need things to be in neat packages and relatively pain free. If it's too painful, I move on to a less taxing situation. Unlike my Korean relatives who are gritty and open stores in bad neighborhoods. They've been robbed and open for business the next day.
This came to my mind when I read the article of an American woman sending her adopted kid back to Russia. I sympathized with Torry-Ann Hansen because she didn't really know how hard child rearing is.
How can this woman be expected to care for a child who is not as cute and sweet as this? It probably was very upsetting that this boy DREW ON HER WALLS (dealbreaker) and he was probably a hulking seven year old that was definitely capable of making true on his threats to kill her.
And honestly, between DVR, work, working out and getting a parfait from Starbuck's, sending the boy back to Russia alone on the plane was definitely for the best. This way she need not face people on the plane:
FELLOW PASSENGER: "So what brings you to Russia?"
TORRY-ANN HANSEN: "Oh, this boy. I adopted him but it just isn't working out. (beat) Are you going to eat those crackers?"
Please, please forget Artyom Savelyev, the boy in this scenario. He's got great PR (hello!! front cover of the NYTimes!!). I'm sure he's in a diamond encrusted limo driving him back to the orphanage where he'll have a beautiful down bed and private bathroom. I heard rumors that Marc Jacobs declared Artyom his new muse for 2012 and would furnish Artyom with wardrobe for the rest of his life.
What really makes me stew is this self righteous quote from Calvin Cannon in an article in the Times:
Calvin Cannon, 44, the owner of Torso Shirts for Men in town, said that when he was a foster parent to a teenager a few years back, the two clashed but stuck it out with the help of a social worker. He said the Hansens could have done the same.
Screw you, Calvin Cannon! Please feel sorry for Torry-Ann. She was only doing what she felt was the best for her son.
USA! USA! USA!
